Can We Build a More Positive World?

Arnold Schwarzenegger once said, “If we want a more positive world, it’s our job to build it.” But how do we do that? Can we truly thrive, hope, and make a difference in a world burdened with pollution, wars, crime, global warming, poverty, and hunger? Staying positive amid these challenges isn’t easy, but the key lies in trying – in working towards cleaner, safer, and more compassionate communities.

A Personal Perspective

I consider myself fortunate. I was born in Europe, in Croatia, and I’m Caucasian. My family is big, loving, and supportive. I’ve never faced the kinds of struggles that many people around the world endure daily. Yet, I’ve always been deeply moved by the pain and suffering I’ve seen or read about. As a history major, I studied some of humanity’s darkest periods and naively believed that nothing could be worse than the World Wars. But today, in 2025, I’m not so sure.

War conflicts are escalating, hatred and discrimination are rampant, and issues like racism, misogyny, and homophobia persist. The internet has made these problems more visible than ever before. Yet, despite the global audience, progress often feels stagnant. How is it that we can witness such suffering and remain inactive?

Choosing to Act

I’ll admit, this awareness initially left me feeling depressed and powerless. I worried constantly about the people suffering from war, discrimination, and hate. It was heartbreaking to hear hurtful comments from people close to me about LGBTQ+ communities or global conflicts. I often wondered, how can intelligent people hold such beliefs? But then I realized: I had a choice. Instead of being hurt or remaining silent, I could speak up.

Expressing my opinions and educating others became my way of making a difference. Rather than yelling or arguing, I focused on reasoning with people and presenting basic human logic. At first, the reactions weren’t encouraging. Some people disagreed outright or even felt insulted. But over time, I saw glimmers of change. Even if I managed to alter one person’s perspective, that was a victory. Because every small step counts in building a more positive world.

Standing Up Against Injustice

When someone says something hateful or supports harmful ideologies, silence is not an option. Speaking out, even when it’s uncomfortable, is crucial. Hate and prejudice thrive in silence. Correcting misinformation, challenging harmful beliefs, and promoting compassion can gradually chip away at negativity.

Of course, changing someone’s mind isn’t always possible, and that’s okay. The important thing is to stand up for what’s right. It’s not about winning every argument. It’s about planting seeds of understanding and kindness.

Teaching the Next Generation

As a parent, I’m committed to teaching my child the values that can help build a better world. Compassion and empathy are essential in a world full of injustice. Diversity should be celebrated because our differences make us stronger. Not two snowflakes are alike. Respect others’ opinions, even when you disagree, unless those opinions promote hatred or harm. In those cases, it’s okay to stand firm and speak out.

I want my child to understand that love and respect – for themselves and others – are powerful tools for creating change. Simple actions, like showing kindness, standing up against bullying, and helping those in need, can make a big difference. Most importantly, I want them to know that believing in something isn’t enough. They must act on those beliefs, because inaction allows injustice to persist.

Building a Better Future

Creating a more positive world is a collective effort. It starts with small, everyday actions: reaching out to a neighbor in need, speaking up against discrimination, or volunteering for a cause you care about. When these actions are multiplied across communities, they create waves of change.

Yes, the world is full of challenges. But it is also full of potential – potential for kindness, progress, and hope. By choosing to act, even in small ways, we can create a ripple effect that moves us closer to the positive world we dream of. And that, as Schwarzenegger said, is our job.

What will you do?

Now, it’s your turn. Look around and find ways to make a difference, no matter how small. Smile at a stranger, donate to a cause, volunteer your time, or simply have a conversation that spreads understanding and compassion. Stand up against injustice when you see it, and encourage others to do the same. Together, our individual efforts can add up to something extraordinary.

Remember, building a better world starts with you. What will you do today to help create a more positive future?
